Translate the AI headline into a buyer's question
Industry reports about AI-enabled manufacturing often focus on speed, detection accuracy or reduced downtime. Those figures belong to a particular process and measurement method. A result from a power plant or an electronics line is not evidence of fastener quality at another factory.
Instead of asking whether a supplier “uses AI”, ask how an abnormal result is handled. Can the team identify the affected batch, prevent release, document the decision and find other potentially affected stock? The same question is useful whether the system uses paper, conventional software or AI.
Follow one batch from receipt to dispatch
| Stage | Record to connect | A useful challenge question |
|---|---|---|
| Material receipt | Supplier, material identification and acceptance | Can mixed material be distinguished? |
| Production | Order, drawing revision and relevant process records | What happens after a tool or process change? |
| Inspection | Sample identity, results and acceptance criteria | Can the result be traced to this batch? |
| Packing | Contents, count, label and carton identification | Can a mislabelled pack be isolated? |
| Dispatch | Shipment reference and shipped batch | Can the recipient identify affected stock? |
The required detail varies with product risk and customer requirements. A barcode alone does not establish traceability: the linked information must remain accurate and retrievable.
A simple audit exercise
Choose one finished carton and ask the supplier to work backwards. Find its pack specification, production batch and inspection record. Then work forwards from one material batch to the shipments that used it. This two-way exercise is more informative than looking at a software logo.
Record gaps precisely. If the batch can be traced but the drawing revision cannot, the issue is configuration control. If a result exists but its sample is unidentified, the issue is the evidence link. Calling both problems “not digital enough” hides the repair needed.
Keep automation claims proportionate
A vision system may inspect visible geometry while missing a material or mechanical-property issue. An AI-generated summary may help staff review records, but it should not silently replace measured results or an authorised release decision. Ask which characteristics are actually controlled and how the measurement system is checked.
Does every screw need an individual serial number?
Not necessarily. Lot-level traceability may suit a product and contract; individual identification may be needed elsewhere. Define the requirement instead of assuming one rule for every fastener.
What should accompany a retail-pack enquiry?
Include the required batch identification, label fields and document-retention expectations. Resolve these before artwork is approved.
T.K. Excellent's published manufacturing profile describes production and packaging operations. For a new project, request the specific traceability and inspection arrangement relevant to the proposed item rather than treating a general factory description as product approval.
