Fastener Testing: What Buyers Should Specify Before Ordering

A fastener enquiry is easier to quote and verify when it defines what the product must do. A size and a photograph are a useful start, but the material, application, finish and acceptance requirements help determine which checks matter.

T.K. Excellent's September 2024 introduction to fastener testing covered tensile, hardness, driving, torque, packaging-drop and salt-spray tests. Here is how buyers can turn those topics into a clearer purchasing brief.

1. Start with the product and its application

Provide a drawing or a complete specification: thread type and pitch, diameter, length, head and drive, material or property class, and finish. Describe the mating material and intended use. A screw driven into sheet metal and a bolt assembled with a nut present different questions.

Identify the relevant standard and edition where one is specified. For example, ISO 898-1 addresses defined carbon-steel and alloy-steel bolts, screws and studs. Its scope should not be treated as covering every fastener or every performance characteristic.

2. Match the check to the question

  • Tensile testing: what load-related mechanical requirements must the fastener meet under the specified test method?
  • Hardness testing: what surface or core hardness requirement applies, and how will it be measured?
  • Driving tests: can the selected screw install as required in the specified substrate and thickness, using the agreed hole preparation and test conditions?
  • Torque tests: which characteristic is being checked? A failure-torque test and an installation torque specification answer different questions.
  • Packaging tests: will the proposed filled pack meet the agreed handling and distribution requirements?

Agree on the test method, sample plan and acceptance limits before placing the order. A test name alone leaves room for different interpretations.

3. Define corrosion requirements precisely

If salt-spray testing is required, specify the method, exposure duration, coating condition and acceptance criteria. Make clear which type of corrosion is being assessed and on which surfaces.

ASTM B117's public scope and guidance distinguish controlled salt-spray exposure from performance in natural environments. Test hours should not be converted directly into a promised number of outdoor service years. The agreed product specification must define how results will be assessed.

4. Include the finished retail pack

For DIY assortments, the pack is part of the product. Include the contents and quantities, compartment layout, labelling, barcode requirements and outer-carton information in the enquiry. Any drop or handling test should use the agreed finished-pack configuration and procedure.

A checklist for your next enquiry

  • Drawing or sample reference, dimensions, tolerances and thread details.
  • Material or property class, finish and intended environment.
  • Application, mating materials and installation conditions.
  • Required standards, tests, sampling and acceptance criteria.
  • Order quantity, pack configuration and documentation requirements.
