Salt Spray Hours Are Not Outdoor Service Life

BUYER KNOWLEDGE / T.K. EXCELLENT · 14 OCTOBER 2026

A salt spray result is a result under specified laboratory conditions. It is not a direct conversion into years outdoors. Buyers comparing fastener finishes should read the method, specimen condition and failure criteria before comparing the number of hours.

Why this distinction matters

Corrosion-related industry news draws attention to a real purchasing issue: a small fastener can have consequences far beyond its price. However, a news report rarely contains enough detail to identify the correct coating for another application. The substrate, environment, joint and installation process all matter.

This guide does not repeat unverified recall totals or identify a supplier as responsible for an incident. It focuses on the evidence a buyer can request before specifying a finish.

What ISO 9227 says

ISO 9227:2022 describes equipment, reagents and procedures for salt spray testing. Its official abstract also explains that product specifications must define matters such as exposure period and interpretation. The methods are not intended to predict long-term corrosion resistance or rank different materials by real-world durability.

That makes a statement such as “500 hours equals five years outdoors” unsuitable without a separate, defensible relationship for the precise application. A longer test duration alone does not establish a longer service life in every environment.

Read the report, not only the headline

Report detailQuestion for the supplier
MethodWhich salt spray procedure and edition were used?
SpecimenWas the finished fastener tested, and in what condition?
AcceptanceWas the criterion red rust, white corrosion, another change or a combination?
TimingWhen were specimens examined and how were results recorded?
TraceabilityWhich product, finish and batch does the report cover?

Handling, installation damage and contact with other materials can change the service conditions. The test plan should reflect the risk being investigated rather than simply selecting the largest number available in a catalogue.

Match the evidence to the application

An indoor dry fixing and a component exposed to weather do not share the same exposure. Define the environment and required life, then agree the suitable material or finish and the supporting validation. Where a connection is safety-critical, the responsible designer should establish the application-specific requirements.

Also check whether a finish change affects dimensions or assembly behaviour. Corrosion protection is one requirement within a fastener specification, not permission to overlook fit or tightening performance.

Can I compare two “salt spray passed” claims directly?

Only after checking that the methods, specimens, acceptance criteria and reporting basis are comparable.

Does stainless steel mean maintenance-free in every environment?

No. Grade, environment, contact materials and product design still matter. Avoid broad claims that omit these conditions.

For a T.K. Excellent sourcing review, provide the intended exposure, product drawing, finish requirements and test criteria. Ask for documents covering the actual item rather than assuming a general laboratory capability proves a specific service life.
